Black Cohosh Latin name: Aceta racemosa Parts used: Root and rhizome.
Actions: Alterative, emmenagogue, and antiseptic. Habitat: Shaded areas with moist soil. They typically grow in woodland areas that receive colder temperatures during the winter months. Roots can be divided in spring and fall. Energetics: Bitter and cooling. Black Cohosh is often used by women who are going through menopause, it is said to balance out the hormones due to its “estrogen-like qualities”. It is also used to in combination with Blue Cohosh to stimulate uterine contractions, this action is sometimes desired by those of us wish to bring upon late periods and even induce labor! ***Do not use this plant during pregnancy, unless under guidance of a medical practitioner***
